Why Makeup Pills Over Sunscreen
The only clinical study of pilling found it happens at the sunscreen step, not the makeup step — and that foundation usually fixes it. Almost everything else you've read about this has no evidence behind it.

There is exactly one clinical study of cosmetic pilling. It found something the question itself gets backwards.
Pilling overwhelmingly happens at the sunscreen step. And applying foundation on top usually fixed it.
Nothing here is a reason to skip sunscreen, use less of it, thin it out, or choose one based on pilling.
If anything, the opposite: sunscreen only works as a continuous, even film. Research on film uniformity shows that non-uniform distribution accounts for large gaps between the protection a sunscreen should give and the protection it actually delivers. So a film that has broken up into little rolls is a photoprotection problem before it is a cosmetic one. Fixing pilling is an argument for sunscreen, not against it.
The numbers, and what they mean for you
Lua and colleagues (2024) put 528 volunteers through skin assessments and then three steps of product layering, checking for pilling after each step. From the abstract:
"217 volunteers (41%) experienced pilling. The majority of pilling (n = 655 events) occurred following sunscreen application, while only a few pilling events (n = 35) occurred with foundation. Foundation improved pilling caused by sunscreen in 98.9% of cases."
That is roughly nineteen sunscreen-step pilling events for every one foundation-step event.
If you have been searching for why your makeup pills over sunscreen, the most likely answer is that it doesn't — the film was already failing when you applied the sunscreen, and you noticed the debris when you went back over it with foundation. The step where you see it and the step where it happens are not the same step.
The study's own conclusion: "Sunscreen is a promoter of pilling, while foundation may resolve pilling in many cases."
It's mechanical, not chemical
The universal explanation is that two products "react" with each other. The study's own results falsify that in three separate ways.
- Pilling did not require two products. Two of the three subject groups pilled with sunscreen applied as a single layer. If pilling needed two mutually incompatible products, that could not happen.
- Adding a product on top fixed it — in 98.9% of cases. Chemical incompatibility predicts the opposite.
- Adding a product underneath fixed it too, for a whole subgroup: people who pilled with sunscreen alone stopped pilling once a base product went on first. That is the reverse of "you're using too many layers".
Meanwhile the variable that clearly did drive pilling is purely mechanical — how you move your fingers. Four methods were tested: patting, rubbing in a circular motion, rubbing in a linear motion, and pressing. As the abstract records:
"Two application methods, rubbing of products in circular and linear motions, yielded the highest numbers of pilling events."
The accurate framing is that pilling is the mechanical failure of a film under shear. A separate in-vitro study on sunscreen films showed the chain directly: where two film-forming agents bound poorly together, the resulting weak film was physically carried away under rubbing, while a well-bound film survived the same treatment intact.
So compatibility is real — but it is a property of how well a film holds together, not a reaction between two products on your face. It acts upstream of the friction, not instead of it.
Where the skin-type advice goes wrong
The study measured skin physiology before layering:
"Volunteers experiencing pilling with both sunscreen and foundation had significantly lower facial skin hydration and oiliness, higher pH, and smoother skin texture (P < 0.05)."
Read that carefully, because half of it confirms the folk explanation and half of it inverts it.
The dryness half survives. Lower hydration and lower oiliness both tracked with pilling.
The texture half does not. Smoother skin pilled more, not rougher. The near-universal advice — "you have dead skin buildup, go exfoliate" — is contradicted on its own key variable by the only study that has measured it.
The higher-pH association is also reported, and is absent from popular explanations entirely. The paper offers no mechanism for it, and neither will we.
This is a single cross-sectional study. It shows association, not causation. The cohort was 528 women aged 20–49 in one Chinese city, tested with one sunscreen and one foundation.
It also carries a conflict-of-interest declaration: several authors were employees of cosmetics companies. That does not make the findings wrong — it is a properly disclosed industry study and the first of its kind — but it is worth knowing, and it is a reason to want the work replicated rather than treated as settled.
We are reporting it because it is the only evidence that exists, not because one study should overturn your experience.
Nobody knows which ingredients do it
This is the part where the internet is most confident and the evidence is thinnest.
The study built ten different base formulations and layered the same sunscreen over each, on the same volunteers. Pilling rates differed between them — so formulation demonstrably matters. But the paper is explicit about what it could not answer:
"Further work is also needed to identify the ingredients that have potential pilling potential."
We searched for primary sources implicating the usual suspects — silicones versus water-based formulas, gums, carbomers, PEGs — and found none. Not weak evidence. No evidence. Every confident ingredient list circulating online has no primary basis that we could locate.
The one film-former incompatibility actually documented in peer review is not the one anyone names: it was between two oil-phase film formers inside a single product, not between two layered products, and not silicone-versus-water. And that paper says the underlying science is "scarce".
And nobody has measured a wait time
You will be told to wait a specific number of minutes between layers. That number appears to have been borrowed from somewhere else entirely.
The clinical study did not test wait time at all. There is no drying-time variable in it; the protocol says only that products were layered after they had been absorbed. Its conclusion lists skin physiology and application method as the likely factors. Time is not among them.
The familiar fifteen minutes is a sun protection instruction. The American Academy of Dermatology's guidance on applying sunscreen says: "Apply sunscreen before going outdoors. It takes approximately 15 minutes for your skin to absorb the sunscreen and protect you." That is about when you are protected, not about whether the next layer will pill.
Waiting is plausible and harmless and we are not telling you to stop. We are telling you that nobody has measured it, so we are not going to put a number on it.
What to actually change
Ranked by how well evidenced it is, which is not the same as ranked by how often it is recommended.
- Stop rubbing. Pat or press instead. This is the one intervention the study directly tested, and the two rubbing motions produced the most pilling.
- Notice which step it happens at. If it appears when you apply sunscreen, no amount of changing your foundation will help.
- Try something underneath. Counterintuitive, but a whole subgroup stopped pilling once a base product went on first.
- Waiting is worth trying and is not measured. If you currently wait no time at all, waiting is a reasonable thing to test on yourself.
- Exfoliating is the least supported. Smoother skin pilled more in the only study that looked. That is not a reason to stop exfoliating for other purposes — it is a reason not to expect it to fix this.
What we could not establish
- Which ingredients are responsible. The paper that could have told us has its formulations in a supplementary file we could not retrieve. Nobody has published this.
- How long to wait between layers. Untested. We will not invent a figure.
- Whether the "rolling" description is right. Every article describes a partly-dried layer rolling into a ball under a fingertip. It is mechanically plausible and matches how polymer films fail elsewhere, but we found no source demonstrating it for cosmetics.
- Whether any of this generalises. One study, one city, one climate, one product pair, one sex, one age band.
While researching this, a specific and very quotable statistic surfaced — a named journal, a year, a threshold number of film-forming agents, and an effect size. It read exactly like a finding.
We could not locate any such paper, and the one page it appeared alongside does not contain the claim either. So it is not in this article, and we would rather have a gap than a citation that leads nowhere.
If you read a confident number about pilling somewhere, it is worth asking where it came from.
